Gibson partners with Loog to release a series of three-string Les Paul guitars for kids. But will the youngest demo care?

Word on the street is the youngsters don’t like rock anymore. But maybe this will help stir a new generation of ax-wielders. Gibson says these fun-sized three-string guitars are the real deal—Loog’s take on Gibson’s iconic Les Paul and SG models are fitted with real guitar strings and standard tuning, but at half the scale.

Purists will scoff, though maybe there’s something more accessible about these mini-me guitars.

The decision to limit the guitars to three strings serves to make real guitar playing less intimidating to tiny hands. With chords limited to triads, picking up the basics is a lot easier, making the eventual transition to full-scale six-string guitars that much more natural.

The mini Gibson x Loog Les Paul and SG models are also made of real wood, fitted with a pickup, and a volume knob. The Les Paul comes in three colors: TV Yellow, Frost Blue, and Shell Pink. Meanwhile, the SG comes in a single shade of Cardinal Red.

Interesting demo expansion play — but will it work?

Each guitar comes with the tools to make learning easy and keep the process fun and engaging. There are flashcards, a colorful activity book, and an app where adults can learn alongside their kids. The app has video lessons to help fine-tune guitar skills, as well as guides to playing over 200 songs; everything from The Beatles to Taylor Swift. Further, there’s an interactive TV show, arcade, and bedtime stories to keep your kid engaged across all aspects of their day.

“These are the guitars we all drool over—the Les Paul, the SG—and now we’ve had the chance to work with the Gibson team to bring them to life in a way that’s approachable and inspiring for kids,” said Rafael Atijas, Founder and CEO of Loog Guitars.

Incidentally, not everyone agrees with the ‘kid-size’ approach to teaching.

Far from the musical world, golf long-hitter John Daly famously never had shortened clubs during his youth. Perhaps adapting to a grown-sized axe is the better path towards proficiency — even if it’s a pain to play and lug around.
