Phish Offer Extended “Chalk Dust,” New Tunes at MSG

Phish’s annual New Year’s Eve run at New York’s Madison Square Garden continued last night. The evening kicked off with a high-energy run from “Free” into “The Moma Dance,” and then moved into the classic “Maze,” the relatively new favorite “Evolve,” the participatory “Stash,” “Back on the Train” and “Theme From the Bottom.” The latter song segued into the gentle “Mountains in the Mist,” a rocking “46 Days” and the reggae-touched “Drift While You’re Sleeping.”

The Vermont Quartet’s second set was a jammed out offering, opening with a “Chalk Dust Torture” that stretched to almost 23 minutes and then moved into an almost 17-minute “Oblivion,” a new tune Trey Anastasio originally introduced with his trio this May. Then, the group launched into the post-rock Siket Disc gem “What’s the Use?,” which segued into “My Friend, My Friend” and “Sand.” The bluesy Ghosts of the Forest cut “About to Run” and the classic “Harry Hood” closed the second set.

Then, for an encore, Phish offered another tune from Anastasio’s solo repertoire, the breezy “Lonely Trip,” and a dark “ Carini” to end the night.
