SZA tracks have leaked online, prompting the singer to take to social media to denounce the theft—and threaten legal action.

Over the weekend, the singer took to Twitter (X) to express frustration at the leaks. “Leaking my music is stealing. This is my job. This is my life and my intellectual property,” the singer writes. “You are a fucking thief and I promise to put maximum energy into holding everyone accountable to the full extent of the law. I am tired.”

SZA hasn’t announced an official release date for Lana, but she’s been promoting it on social media for months to fans. Now it appears someone has taken liberties and leaked the music online. The R&B artist has spoken publicly about how much leaking impacts her creative process—ruining the whole thing.

“When people leak my songs, they ruin them,” she told Variety in an interview in November 2023. “It’s something unfinished that you decided was ready to be shared. And it’s like, f*ck you. Now I’m not releasing it. Play your leak, but you’re not gonna bully me into dropping music.”

“I’m now embarrassed by this less-than-correct version that you put out. You’ve sent me into a weird space creatively when you could have just waited for me, but you’re selfish.”

While SZA has not named any names, it will be interesting to see if any legal action results from these leaks. Leaks destroy an artists’ confidence in a project, especially when they’re leaks of unfinished works. But it’s also worth noting that the public denouncement might have a Streisand Effect on the leaks—bringing more attention to them than they would have otherwise.

“She basically advertised them with this tweet so I’m assuming way more people will listen to these specific leaks than would have,” comments a reddit user on the situation. Seems pretty apt. SZA could pursue legal action against the thief without a public announcement of the process announcing leaked music.
