Sierra Ferrell Details New LP ‘Trail of Flowers,’ Shares “Dollar Bill Bar”

Sierra Ferrell has followed up on the announcement of her impending full-length studio project, dubbed Trail of Flowers, due on March 22 via Rounder Records, by sharing the second single, “Dollar Bill Bar.” The set blends a wealth of new ideas with the artist’s classic old-timey approach to musicianship to generate bewitching narratives that build on her struggle to forge a life in a culture transfixed with capitalism.

Across the collection, Ferrell migrates through various locations, generating lyrically-driven imagery and visions of her reality, and takes the listener through tales of dive bar love stories, murder ballads, and stories of her nomadic upbringing. Nikki Lane and Kristen Rogers assist on the set, with featured contributions from Lukas Nelson and Chris Scruggs. 

Trail of Flowers was mostly recorded at Nashville, Tenn.’s Sound Emporium Studios and produced by Eddie Spear (Zach Bryan, Brandi Carlile, Chris Stapleton) and Gary Paczosa (Alison Krauss, Dwight Yoakam, Gillian Welch). On the record, Ferrell said, “With Trail of Flowers, I wanted to make a fuller sound with bigger drums, but still stay true to the stripped-down feel of old-time music whenever it felt right. I wanted to create something that makes people feel nostalgic for the past, but excited about the future of music.”

The musician continued, “I’m just trying to put words and melodies together and build it into something people can pour their feelings into, all their happiness and sorrows, so that it changes their reality a little bit and gives them some comfort. To me music is like medicine. Whenever I write a song and it feels healing to me, I know it can heal other people too.”

Apart from the newly shared single, Ferrell will make her national television debut tonight, Jan. 18, on Jimmy Kimmel Live! at 11:35 pm ET / 10:35 pm CT.
