This Is Getting Worse: AI-Generated Track Briefly Appears on Toto’s Official Spotify Page

An AI-generated track recently surfaced on the official Spotify page for the iconic 80s band Toto. The appearance of AI tracks on official Artist Pages continues to raise questions in the industry about Spotify’s response to this emerging type of AI fraud.

The incident happened just days after a similar event involving Blaze Foley, a deceased singer-songwriter from Texas. The track that appeared on Toto’s page was called “Name This Night” and appeared to be an instrumental track with a stock-like sunset. The release of the track included no prior mention from the band’s official channels, immediately raising suspicions among long-time Toto fans. Toto is the highest profile band to be targeted by this AI scam with 28 million monthly listeners.

The song was quickly identified as AI-generated with no involvement from any current or past band members. Although it was removed in short order, it was live long enough to prompt discussions among fans and Toto’s inner circle. Steve Lukather, Toto’s only remaining original member, discovered the AI track and moved quickly to have it removed from the band’s Spotify profile.

“I am surprised Spotify let this on,” Lukather said in a statement to media. “There is not much we can do but catch them and have it taken down. It is shameless now. It will be worse, if say, they take our entire catalog and then AI makes a new Toto record that sounds really close to us but is not.”

This incident is yet another highlight of a growing industry problem for Spotify. Deceptive, AI-generated songs masquerading as releases from famous songwriters or bands should not be a targetable form of fraud for scammers. In the Blaze Foley case, the song titled “Together” appeared posthumously and was also quickly debunked. But rights holders have called for more robust vetting of their official Artist Pages and a verification process in place before streaming platforms can release new music that alerts their millions of monthly listeners.
