Jessica Mauboy Splits With Warner Music, Launches Indie Label
For the first time in her recording career, Jessica Mauboy is an independent artist.
The powerhouse Indigenous Australian singer and songwriter launches her own label Jamally, distributed by DistroDirect.
Jamally is created as a platform for Mauboy’s artistic freedom, reps say, allowing her to set the strategy for her own creative process, from recording, releasing, and marketing music.
“This is the start of a new chapter for me – not just as a singer or performer, but as a storyteller and businesswoman too,” she explains in a statement.
To celebrate her entry into the indie ranks, Mauboy drops the single “While I Got Time”,
written with longtime collaborator PJ Harding.
The fresh track is synced to the Seven network’s Home and Away, soundtracking the emotional farewell of Irene Roberts, played by 2025 Gold Logie nominee Lynne McGranger.
On it, she sings: “It’s easy losing faith when you’re counting down the days. But I step into the great unknown with only love and grace.”
It’s a period of considerable change for Mauboy, who split with WMA in 2024; welcomed a baby daughter, Mia, in January; and launched her beauty brand Desert Rose in March. Jamally “felt like a natural evolution,” she enthuses. “It lets me work with people I trust and chase what lights me up.”
Fewer than five years have passed since Mauboy signed with Warner Music Australia, ending a career-long relationship with Sony Music.
With WMA, Mauboy released her fifth studio album, Yours Forever, in February 2024. The collection went on to nab ARIA Award nominations for Best Pop Release and Song Of The Year for “Give You Love”.
Mauboy first signed to Sony Music after run on the 2006 season of Australian Idol, when she finished second behind Irishman Damien Leith.
She’s gone on to land seven ARIA top 10 albums and 16 top 20 singles, accumulate over 200 million streams globally and two ARIA Awards.
She made history as the first Indigenous Australian solo artist to debut at No. 1 on the ARIA Albums Chart with The Secret Daughter (Songs From The Original TV Series) in 2016. Mauboy climbed the chart summit once again with 2019’s HILDA.
The Darwin-raised artist represented Australia at the Eurovision Song Contest in 2018, with “We Got Love”, and had the honours for leading Australia’s Paris Olympic Games efforts with the team song “Higher,” which she performed in the French capital.
She’ll perform “While I Got Time” at the 2025 National Indigenous Music Awards (NIMAs) on Saturday, August 9th, presented by YouTube. On the night, Mauboy will be honoured recognised for her outstanding contribution to music and culture with induction to the NIMA Hall of Fame.
