Smallzy’s Surgery Will Close Its Doors This Friday

Kent “Smallzy” Small is turning out the lights at Nova Entertainment’s Smallzy’s Surgery.

“After 13 years and 92 ratings as the number 1 evening show in Australia….The time has come to hang up the headphones in Smallzy’s Surgery,” reads a social post from Small.

“What a ride,” he continues.

Small has been on air at Nova Entertainment for more than 23 years, and has hosted Smallzy’s Surgery weeknights since 2012.

“I never would have imagined getting to do the things I have done, from the celebrity interviews, to Nova’s Red Room and travelling the globe covering the biggest events. They’ve all made the show something very, very special.”

Small’s long-running show “effectively invented the format in this country,” reads a statement from Nova, pointing out that listeners would tune into his spot, year after year, for a “unique take on pop culture, music news and celebrity gossip.”

An avowed music fan, Small conducted over 263 interviews with artists and personalities in 2018 alone, including Jared Leto and Nicole Kidman, and he’s a multiple award winner with a slew of ACRAs (Australian Commercial Radio Awards), including trophies for Best Music Presenter (2013 and 2019) and Best Music Entertainment/Presenter (2016 and 2017).

The veteran broadcaster thanks “everyone who’s been part of the show,” a long list that includes Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran and Katy Perry. “I leave with fond memories, lifelong friendships, but most importantly I’m grateful to every single person who has ever chosen to spend their night with me.”

Small cut his teeth in radio at NOVA Entertainment’s Star104.5 in Gosford after graduating from the Australian Film Television and Radio School.

It’s unclear what’s next, though Small won’t struggle to reach an audience. He’s a bonafide social media influencer, with over 70,000 Instagram followers and upwards of 163,000 followers on X (formerly Twitter). 

The Surgery doors will close for the final time this Friday, August 15^th from 8pm-10pm.
