Last night, August 11, My Morning Jacket rolled into Salt Lake City for the fifth performance in the latest stint of their expansive is Tour. After a rare appearance from founding guitarist Johnny Quaid in Idaho, the revered roots rock quintet kept the thrills coming with another action-packed 23-song set. In keeping with a trend that brought several highlights to their spring dates, the band bolstered their performance on Monday night with a sit-in from show-opener Melt’s Veronica Stewart-Frommer.
My Morning Jacket stepped into the spotlight at Red Butte Garden with “At Dawn,” the title track from their 2001 second studio album. The band continued by tearing into two central cuts from Z, their groundbreaking fourth studio album hailed as a masterpiece of modern roots rock and one of the defining rock albums of the 2000s. Energetic treatments of “It Beats 4 U” and “Off the Record” aligned with the project’s 20th anniversary, celebrated today with the announcement of a deluxe remaster featuring 14 previously unreleased entries. Set to arrive on Oct. 3 via ATO, the fresh look at the enduring classic is previewed by the advance single “Where to Begin,” originally recorded for Cameron Crowe’s 2005 film Elizabethtown in one of the group’s first sessions with guitarist Carl Broemel and keyboardist Bo Koster.
Onstage, My Morning Jacket rode this exhilarating momentum into “Die for It,” the evening’s first inclusion from their 10th studio album is, which landed in March. In the remainder of the performance, the quintet brought on only four further songs from the project–“Time Waited,” “Out in the Open,” “Half a Lifetime” and “Beginning from the Ending”–within a diverse mix of fan favorites from throughout their expansive discography, including “Mahgeetah,” “Picture of You,” “I’m Amazed,” “Holdin On to Black Metal.” “Anytime” and the set-closing “Evil Urges.” When the band returned for an encore, they welcomed Melt vocalist Stewart-Frommer, just as they’d done with spring series opener Grace Cummings, for a guest spot on “Golden.” To wrap the staging, they delivered a roaring finale of “The Way That He Sings” and “Circuital.”
My Morning Jacket will return to the stage tomorrow for an engagement at Dillon, Colo.’s Dillon Amphitheatre, then proceed with 23 further shows–including several special Z 20-year anniversary performances–through Nov. 1. Find tickets and more information at mymorningjacket.com/tour.
