‘You’re Not Alone’: The Kid LAROI Minds Mental Health For New Campaign

The Kid LAROI wants us to talk about — and work on — our mental health.

The superstar Gadigal-born artist with Kamilaroi roots is throwing his considerable profile behind a public service announcement, timed to coincide with National Suicide Prevention Month.

“October 10 is World Mental Health Day. This year, I’m celebrating with Project Healthy Minds and a new era of mental health, where stigmas are out and help is easy to find. Done with silence and sweeping things under the rug,” he says in a video produced by the not-for-profit Project Healthy Minds and OBB Media.

“Instead doing the hard work, saying the things that usually go unsaid. Because working on your mental health is uncomfortable but it’s worth it. You’re worth it and you’re not alone. So take care of your mental health.”

The Los Angeles-based artist has seen and done much in his 22 years.

LAROI (born Charlton Howard) spoke candidly about the highs and lows of his profession, mental health struggles, and much more for the 2024 Prime Video documentary Kids Are Growing Up: A Story About a Kid Named LAROI.

As a teenager, LAROI endured the brutal experience of watching his close friend Juice WRLD die from a drug overdose, a horrifying moment he recounted in the 2021 Tommy Oliver-directed doco Juice WRLD: Into the Abyss.

Despite the challenges, LAROI enjoyed a flying start to his recording career. In 2021, he became the youngest Australian solo artist to lead the ARIA Albums Chart, when F*ck Love (Savage) went to No. 1.

Also, he was the youngest winner at the 2021 APRA Music Awards, where he took out the newcomer award.

Since then, he has bagged his first leader on the Billboard 200 chart, and the Billboard Hot 100 with “Stay,” a collaboration with Justin Bieber and one of the biggest global hits of the decade to-date. At the 2022 Grammy Awards, he was shortlisted for best newcomer.

The Kid has dropped a hattrick of fresh tracks this year, including the smooth, funky number “How Does It Feel?,” a collaboration with bass guitar wizard Thundercat.

The mental health PDA will air in AMC Theatres across North America beginning in September.
