Last night, Sept. 16, Phish rolled into Alpharetta, Ga., for the latest stop in their short and sweet late-summer tour. The fourth stop in their nine-show sprint was the first of two nights at Ameris Bank Amphitheatre, a venue that’s regularly welcomed the legendary jam quartet for 15 years. As the cherry on top of an unforgettable summer tour, Phish’s current run has so far centered on well-built and well-played sets over the sort of shock and awe they dished out in the dog days, and Tuesday’s show stuck to the winning formula with some notable highlights.
Phish stepped onstage in Alpharetta with the frantic fan-favorite instrumental “Buried Alive,” a tried and true opener that is often taken as a sign of good things to come. Without hesitation, the band jumped into the rocking pulse of “AC/DC Bag,” packed into a relatively compact treatment and segued into an unexpected and rewarding “Slave to the Traffic Light.” Another crowd-pleasing curveball came with the grand first chords of Frank Zappa’s “Peaches in Regalia,” deftly delivered over three minutes and followed by “Tube,” which clocked in at 11 minutes as the evening’s first proper jam.
Bassist Mike Gordon assumed the microphone to helm his solo original “555,” which was merged into an exuberant “My Soul” and followed by a dynamic, 13-minute, whistle-free “Reba.” Following a 10-minute exploration of “Maze,” Phish sprinted through to the setbreak with “Horn” and a graceful, jazzy “The Squirming Coil,” which featured some seamlessly traded leads between Page McConnell’s piano and Trey Anastasio’s soaring guitar.
Phish blasted into the second set with the tight, murky funk of “Oblivion,” which rounded the 17-minute mark as the show’s longest single track. “David Bowie” followed with the sort of bright and quick interplay that’s become a standard for the song, uncommonly carried on for more than 11 minutes. With these two standalone entries under their belt, Phish ripped into an expansive five-track medley with a roaring, red-hot, 17-minute “Fuego.” The band’s explosive energy melted away into a tender “Leaves,” which morphed into the familiar funk of Lee Dorsey’s “Sneakin’ Sally Through the Alley.”
After raising the tempo for “The Howling” and gliding into the wide-eyed wonder of “Backwards Down the Number Line,” Phish wrapped up their second set with “Drift While You’re Sleeping,” which shot up from a distant, contemplative register into an enthralling finale over the course of 13 minutes. To cap off the show, the band returned with a shadowy “Monsters” and plucky, ecstatic trip through “Run Like an Antelope.”
Phish will return to the stage tonight, Sept. 17, with their follow-up at Ameris Bank Amphitheatre, then wrap up the run with a three-night return to Hampton, Va.’s Hampton Coliseum. Find tickets and more information at phish.com.
