The String Cheese Incident Pull Together Debuts and Revived Covers During “Club Transylvania” Set at Hulaween

On Saturday, November 1, The String Cheese Incident returned to Suwannee Hulaween’s Live Oak, Fla., location, where they were scheduled to submit two sets of songs performed in front of a festival audience. The initial set leaned on originals, before an unforgettable second set that featured all debuts and revived covers, ranging from disco-era favorites to rock-and-roll standards, under the thematic umbrella: Club Transylvania. 

The gig began with what one might expect from the long-running Colorado jam vehicle, pieces from their songbook, which included the band’s Tony White featured release, “All We Got,” the Inside Out cut “Close Your Eyes,” followed by a sequence of “Birdland,” “Flying East Jam,” and “One Step Closer.” “BollyMunster” arrived next,” preluding set one’s final pairing, “Sirens” and “Tinder Box.”

When the band returned to the stage for their second set, coffins seemed to jolt open, rousing a group of blood-red vampires to assume their slots on stage and to evoke the creation of Club Transylvania, a thematic offering of first time covers and lauded returns, that began with Chic’s “Le Freak,” played for the first time since Oct. 29, 2022. They kept the motif going by returning to the Bee Gees’ classic, “Stayin’ Alive,” ending a nine-year gap in performances. 

Kanika Moore helped with the vocal delivery on select numbers and assumed the band’s guest slot. As the set continued, the ensemble worked through three debuts: Sophie Ellis-Bextor’s “Murder on the Dance Floor,” Diana Ross’ “I’m Coming Out,” and OutKast’s “Dracula’s Wedding.” Gloria Gaynor’s “I Will Survive” was a setlist return, after being packed away since 2022. 

Club Transylvania continued to come to life during the night’s debut of Nina Simone’s “Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood,” and the first cover of The Rolling Stones’ “Sympathy For The Devil,” since Oct. 3, 2019. After turning in the Beggars Banquet classic, the group played through another series of debuts: The Doors’ “People Are Strange,” Duran Duran’s “Hungry Like the Wolf,” Rob Zombie’s “Dragula,” which looped back to the Duran Duran fan favorite without pause. 

With steam left in the tank, the band turned in a final first-time cover, marking the end of their Hulaween frame with Lady Gaga’s “Zombie Boy” followed by a complimentary tack on Kool and the Gang’s “Kool and the Gang.” Ultimately, the band’s encore returned to a concert staple and original, “Hi Ho No Show.”
