After an eight-year pause in studio releases, The Barr Brothers delivered their latest record, Let It Hiss, on October 17. The folk-leaning batch of songs pulls back a spikey shield to reveal a layer of chamomile-brewed vulnerability, like a reflective pause that relishes in shared experience and the brazen musical kinship between brothers, Brad and Andrew Barr. In recognition of the set’s arrival, Brad tapped Stuart Bogie (sax and clarinet) and Shahzad Ismaily (bass) to perform select songs from the album for WNYC’s in-studio session.

In the videos, which have been shared on WNYC’s New Sounds YouTube page, Brad checks in with a selection of three numbers that initially appeared on the fourth studio album to arrive under The Barr Brothers. While Andrew was not present for the taping, Brad enlisted New York City heavy-hitters, including woodwind hero, Bogie, in addition to a member of Marc Ribot’s Ceramic Dog trio, Ismaily.

Together, the three musicians forge down a path and turn out live deliveries of “Run Right Into It,” “Another Tangerine,” and “Naturally.” In the videos linked below, Brad, Bogie, and Ismaily go off script at times, ab-libbing complementary riffs atop emotive compositions that showcase each player’s masterful ability to insert instrumental squiggles and quirks. Watch the videos below.
