North Mississippi Allstars Exhibit Opens at GRAMMY Museum Mississippi
The North Mississippi Allstars came of age in the geographic region referenced in their name. Back in 1996 Luther and Cody Dickinson enlisted bassist Chris Chew and launched the project with the goal of presenting the sounds of their home region through a modern-day lens. The group’s debut record, Shake Hands with Shorty was released four years later. Although Chew departed in 2015, the Dickinsons have maintained their mission with some additional like-minded collaborators.
As the Dickinsons told Relix earlier this year in conjunction with the release of their latest studio effort, “Still Shakin’ is a celebration of our life-changing first album, which we released 25 years ago, and a love letter of appreciation to everyone who supported us and kept us in the game all these years. In the spirit of our debut, we recorded Mississippi classics that, despite inspiring us to start the band in 1996, we have yet to record. We also wanted to feature our fantastic bandmates Joey Williams and Rayfield ‘Ray Ray’ Hollman, who inspire us to no end. Their contributions elevate NMA to new heights,”
The group’s journey is honored via a new exhibit in the GRAMMY Museum Mississippi. As the Dickinsons have noted, “From our homemade instruments and road-worn gear to the stories behind the music, this installation celebrates the roots, family, and community that continue to inspire everything we do. Mississippi raised us, and it means the world to have our journey showcased in a museum dedicated to the artists and traditions that came before us. If you’re passing through Cleveland, [MS] come take a walk through our little corner of the museum. We’re proud to be a part of Mississippi music history ~ and even prouder to keep carrying it forward.”
The group will return to the road in February, while the Grammy Museum Mississippi is open Tuesday through Sunday.
