Widespread Panic are in the midst of a three-night run at Port Chester, NY’s The Capitol Theatre. Last night, during their second show at the storied Westchester venue, area resident and longtime Widespread Panic collaborator Warren Haynes emerged for an extended sequence during the group’s second set and encore.

Haynes first joined in partway through Widespread Panic’s second set for a take on the Sonny Boy Williamson-associated blues classic “Good Morning Little Schoolgirl,” a tune also covered by two veteran bands he has been a member of in the past, The Allman Brothers Band and The Dead. He then remained on stage as Panic launched into a run from “Surprise Valley” into Tom Waits’ “Goin’ Out West,” which Haynes covers with Gov’t Mule, before returning to “Surprise Valley.” The guitarist remained in position as Widespread Panic closed their second set with “Porch Song” and returned for their encore, which consisted of covers of Neil Young’s “Cortez the Killer” and Tom Petty’s “Running Down A Dream.” Widespread Panic had not performed “Cortez the Killer,” which Haynes has made his own with Gov’t Mule and famously joined Dave Matthews Band for in nearby Central Park in 2003, since an August 4, 2019 stop in St. Augustine, FL.

Widespread Panic have a long history with Haynes and first invited him on stage for a sit in during a Telluride, CO gig in 1991. Haynes has collaborated Panic dozens of times since then, but has not performed with them live since a 2016 appearance at the Wanee festival. During the years, Widespread Panic bassist Dave Schools has toured as Gov’t Mule’s bassist, and Haynes and Widespread Panic guitarist Jimmy Herring have performed together as members of The Dead and Phil Lesh’s Quintet. The guitarists also recently regrouped at The Cap for a high-profile tribute to Lesh and will honor the bassist during Christmas Jam next month.
