“When three modern groove masters of modern funk and soul-jazz converge, sparks are bound to fly.” That’s the introduction to The Breaks, a new band that congregates instrumental dynamos guitarist Eddie Roberts (The New Mastersounds), drummer Stanton Moore (Galactic), and organist Robert Walter (The Greyboy Allstars) into a cohesive contemporary funk force. The trio shared a sketch of their musical backgrounds and melded band intentions, along with details on their first live appearances.
After opening their band overview with deep regard for their collective ability to drive a groove, the unit describes their sound and individual strengths: “Rooted in the tradition of late-’60s organ trios and hard-hitting boogaloo, The Breaks push the sound forward with deep-pocket rhythms, tight arrangements, and fearless improvisation.
“Eddie Roberts’ sharp, melodic guitar work dances effortlessly over Stanton Moore’s explosive New Orleans-infused drum grooves, while Robert Walter’s signature Hammond organ tones tie it all together with grit and soul.”
The outline continues by detailing their combined aptitude to reach a flow: “Between them, they’ve logged countless tours, recorded landmark albums, and collaborated with a who’s-who of the modern jam, funk, and jazz worlds. But in The Breaks, the chemistry feels spontaneous—three kindred spirits locking into a groove and letting it ride.”
Setting the stage for what’s to come, the trio concluded with, “From sweaty club sets to major festival stages, The Breaks deliver a sound that’s both deeply rooted and constantly evolving—a raw, joyful celebration of rhythm and musical conversation.”
In tandem with the band announcement, The Breaks have shared details pertaining to their first of two performances, co-bills with George Porter Jr. & Runnin’ Pardners. The concerts are set for Cervantes’ Masterpiece Ballroom & Cervantes’ Other Side in Denver on Friday, Feb. 27, and Saturday, Feb. 28.
Tickets for nights one and two in Denver are available here.
