Bandcamp takes an official stance against artificial intelligence by banning AI-generated audio and music from its platform.
Bandcamp keeps providing users with even more reasons to love its platform. The latest move came in an announcement on Tuesday, in which Bandcamp Support took to Reddit to announce the company’s stance on artificial intelligence: Bandcamp has officially banned the upload of AI-generated audio and music to its platform.
“We believe that the human connection found through music is a vital part of our society and culture, and that music is much more than a product to be consumed,” wrote Bandcamp in a blog post. “Bandcamp was built to directly connect artists and their fans, and to make it easy for fans to support artists equitably so that they can keep making music.”
Bandcamp’s guidelines for generative AI in music and audio aim to instill confidence in fans “that the music they find on Bandcamp was created by humans.” Music and audio that is generated “wholly or in substantial part by AI” is not permitted on the platform. Meanwhile, any use of AI tools to impersonate other artists or styles is strictly prohibited “in accordance with our existing policies prohibiting impersonation and intellectual property infringement.”
“If you encounter music or audio that appears to be made entirely or with heavy reliance on generative AI, please use our reporting tools to flag the content for review by our team,” Bandcamp adds. “We reserve the right to remove any music on suspicion of being AI-generated.”
Fans are already celebrating the move on Reddit and other social sites, with one fan writing: “Bandcamp continues to be the best place to post your music.”
“Absolutely thrilled to hear this,” wrote another. “Y’all are my favorite way to support the artists I love, and I’m happy you’ll continue to be a place that offers a space unlike other music platforms.”
Indeed, Bandcamp’s stance is worthy of celebration across an internet that increasingly leans on artificial intelligence as the technology ramps up in the eyes of investors seeing dollar signs. It’s reassuring that there remain platforms investing in real musicians worldwide.
Bandcamp even reported paying out an impressive $19 million to artists in 2025 alone, reinforcing that the platform plays a significant role in the independent music landscape. Meanwhile, Bandcamp Friday, in which all funds go directly to artists and labels, makes its much-anticipated return on February 6.
