Akon Got “Locked Up” In Georgia—Arrested Due to Outstanding Warrant

Police in Georgia have arrested Senegalese-American singer and rapper Akon on an outstanding warrant. The arrest happened on Friday and was conducted by the Chamblee Police Department.

According to that report, an officer responded to Tint World just after 11 am Friday when Flock cameras alerted them with a car registered to someone with a bench warrant. When the officer arrived, they confirmed the car was registered to Akon, who was standing outside near the car.

Officers state they approached the singer to alert him of the warrant. Following that, Akon complied with their orders while being detained. He was arrested and taken to DeKalb County Jail and released a few hours later. Akon was cited in September after officers found him stranded in a white Tesla Cybertruck on Holcomb Bridge Road—driving on a suspended license.

Police records show that Akon was arrested on a related bench warrant and booked into Smyrna City Jail after being transferred from the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office. It is also unclear whether that Tesla Cybertruck remains impounded or if it was released after his earlier citation. Noted in the original report by officers: “An illegal vape in the center console was seized during the inventory and submitted for destruction.”

What has Akon been up to the past few years? In 2018, the rapper announced plans for a technologically advanced city in his home nation of Senegal—inspired by Marvel’s Black Panther franchise’s depiction of Wakanda. The initial plan outlined a $6 billion city and the initial groundbreaking received lots of press attention. Despite that, construction never advanced beyond a single unfinished reception center and minor recreational facilities.

In July 2025, Senegalese officials confirmed the ‘Akon City’ project was no longer possible and did not exist. The Akon cryptocurrency, planned as the backbone for transactions in the city, saw nearly all of its value erased after its launch in 2020.
