Allman Brothers Band Release 1972 Live Recording ‘Manley Field House, Syracuse University’

The Allman Brothers Band have released a live recording from their iconic Manley Field House performance at Syracuse University circa April 7, 1972. The historic show, captured during the “Five-Man Band” period shortly after the passing of band leader Duane Allman, is now available on CD and digital platforms via the Allman Brothers Band Recording Company.

The impending release is not only the first official release of this widely circulated fan-favorite radio broadcast bootleg, but it also presents the complete show with the highest audio quality preserved from the direct source.

The recording of the performance was made with the band’s cooperation and authorization, using an auxiliary mixing board on the side of the stage with a feed from the Allman Brothers Band’s sound desk. The show was initially recorded and simulcast on Syracuse University’s WAER college radio on the night of the event and subsequently rebroadcast by the station and its former staff members.

The show saw 11 tracks and features set staples from that period, including the show opener “Statesboro Blues,” along with classics like “In Memory of Elizabeth Reed,” “Midnight Rider,” and “Whipping Post.” Additionally, the album includes a unique gem, “Syracuse Jam,” being released for the first time.

Reflecting on the significance of that night, SU concert coordinator Jeff Chard fondly recalls the memorable performance of the “Five Man Band” in the liner notes. He describes the band’s resilience after Duane Allman’s passing and the exceptional chemistry among the remaining original members, emphasizing Berry Oakley’s pivotal role as both the glue and second lead player.

Chard states, “It was a memorable but brief time for the band. Six months later, keyboardist Chuck Leavell was added to the group, making the ABB six players strong again, only to lose Berry in another motorcycle accident on November 11, 1972. But for that one year, with the five original men still standing – and especially on that magical April night in Syracuse – we surely felt the spirit.”
