‘Almost Famous’ Musical Set to Descend on Broadway Later this Year

A musical adaptation of Cameron Crowe’s iconic 2000 rock and roll film, Almost Famous, is set to open on Broadway later this year. The announcement was subtly shared through Twitter, where the production changed their profile writing, “It’s all happening…Broadway 2022 #AlmostFamous.”

It is well known Almost Famous was based on Crowe’s personal experiences writing for Rolling Stone on the road in the 1970s during his teenage years – and its silver screen adaptation remains one of the most beloved rock films of all time. As one may expect, Crowe, who still writes for Rolling Stone on occasion, has continued to maintain influence on the personal tale and as such, authored the lyrics for the musical.

Almost Famous featured a Grammy-winning soundtrack, including Paul Simon’s “America,” Elton John’s “Tiny Dancer,” and David Bowie’s version of Lou Reed’s “I’m Waiting For The Man.” With a “golden (god)” standard to uphold, Crowe collaborated with Broadway composer and Tony Award winner for 2008’s Next To Normal, Tom Kitt, to create original music for the production. Additionally, the production will be co-directed by Crowe alongside Jeremy Herrin.

The musical made its debut in 2019 at the Old Globe Theatre in San Diego, where much of Crowe’s experience that inspired the story took place back during his youth. Additional details about the project have yet to be announced.
