Big Thief have shared “Grandmother” and “Los Angeles,” the third and fourth preview singles from their sixth studio album, Double Infinity, due on Sept. 5 via 4AD. For the follow-up to 2022’s Grammy-nominated Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe In You, Adrianne Lenker, Buck Meek and James Krivchenia welcomed a vast field of friends and peers to capture the energy of spur-of-the-moment collaboration. The album’s latest advances showcase both the fruit of their collective approach and an overarching theme of life’s subtle wonders and undefinable experiences.

“Los Angeles” follows a thread started by the preceding single “All Night All Day” in its view of the powerful bonds formed in romantic relationships, even as those fade into a new kind of love in friendship. “Grandmother” is the first track written by all three of Big Thief’s members, who together turned their focus to the universal experience of generationally inherited joy and pain. The latter features spectral backing vocals and zither from New York experimental icon Laraaji.

Big Thief set Double Infinity to tape last winter, biking back and forth from Brooklyn for three weeks of nine-hour sessions at New York’s Power Station. Together with their longtime collaborator Dom Monks, who produced, mixed and engineered the nine-track project, the band recorded live with limited overdubs, letting improvised arrangements and spontaneous discoveries imbue the project with a kinetic, expressive spirit. This effect is furthered by contributions from 10 guest musicians–Alena Spanger, Caleb Michel, Hannah Cohen, Jon Nellen, Joshua Crumbly, June McDoom, Mikel Patrick Avery, Mikey Buishas and Laraaji–who round out the group’s sound in fits and starts.

Big Thief will take their new record on the road this fall with the Somersault Slide 360 Tour, plotting 20 performances across North America from Sept. 17 to Nov. 7–including a set at Queens, N.Y.’s Forest Hills Stadium and their largest headline show to date at Los Angeles’ Hollywood Bowl. Since their last extended outing, all three members have released solo studio records–Lenker’s Bright Future, Meek’s Haunted Mountain and Krivchenia’s Blood Karaoke and Performing Belief–and Lenker shared a new live album Live at Revolution Hall in April. In February, the trio shared the five-track Passional Relations EP to support wildfire relief in Southern California.

Double Infinity is available to pre-order now. Listen to “Grandmother” and “Los Angeles” below and find more information at bigthief.net.
