Bootleg Rascal are back with a bite. The Yugambeh/Gold Coast duo have today shared their brooding new single ‘Street Shark’, the final taste of new music before their upcoming self-titled album lands on October 29th.

Co-written with longtime pals Seamus Coyle and Freddy Crabs, ‘Street Shark’ leans into a more introspective side of the Rascal repertoire, pulling inspiration from Massive Attack, Gorillaz and MGMT. It’s a hypnotic slow-burn that layers lush instrumentation and dream-soaked vocals, before swelling into a big soaring crescendo.

Bootleg Rascal – ‘Street Shark’

“‘Street Shark’ feels like one of our more sombre tracks,” guitarist Jimmy Young explains in a press statement. “It touches on self-reflection and those moments where you might feel like a bit of a loner or even a bit of a piece of shit. But it’s not all negative – it’s also about taking the good with the bad and making the best out of hard situations.”

The single arrives with a clip shot across Sydney’s Inner West and CBD by director Hamish Stephen, exploring themes of lonerism and self-discovery while still weaving in moments of hope and nostalgia.

Produced by Caleb Tasker (The Terrys, Rum Jungle) and mixed by Ian Pritchett (Angus and Julia Stone, Boo Seeka), Bootleg Rascal’s new record is shaping up to be their most ambitious statement yet.

The duo are currently on the road, bouncing between Australia and New Zealand with a mix of free-entry shows, ticketed gigs and festival slots including Oktoberfest at Polytech Stadium and Dunedin Beer Festival at Forsyth Barr Stadium. It follows a huge year of touring across the UK, EU, NZ and their own BOOTY BLOCK PARTY tour on home turf – plus support slots with reggae icons Steel Pulse.

‘Street Shark’ is out now, with Bootleg Rascal’s self-titled album set to drop October 29.
