Dave Matthews Band Welcome Trombone Shorty and John D’earth During Hometown Shows in Charlottesville

Over the weekend, Dave Matthews Band returned to Charlottesville, Va., for a pair of hometown shows at John Paul Jones Arena. On Friday and Saturday night, DMB welcomed a pair of guests, including Trombone Shorty and a longtime frequenter of the band’s orbit, John D’earth. Both artists took the stage independently, adding to cuts of originals and covers during the latter half of both nights shows.

Friday, Nov. 10, commenced with the first-time opener, “Busted Stuff.” In continuation, the band cascaded into jammed-out renditions of originals and Led Zeppelin’s “Fool in the Rain,” followed by another helping of songs from across their discography. With the conclusion of “Madman’s Eyes,” Matthews welcomed the night’s initial sit-in; D’earth, the trumpeter known for his association with the ensemble, both live and in the studio, assisted on renditions of “Proudest Mary” and “Satellite.”

“The Only Thing” saw the band return to their billed lineup before Shorty took the stage, helping out on “Crush” and “Louisiana Bayou.” After another round of originals, the night’s encore began with Matthew’s solo take on Pearl Jam’s “Just Breathe” and a full band delivery of “Grey Street” to cap the show. Saturday, Nov. 11, started similarly, with guests arriving on stage later, following a heaping of welcomed numbers. 

D’earth took the first guest slot, helping out on a cover of Daniel Lanois’ “The Marker,” paired with “Warehouse.” DMB played “Looking for a Vein” and “Spaceman,” separating the time between visitors. Much like night one, Shorty arrived next, assisting on “Jimi Thing” into a cover of the Commodores’ “Brick House” and a set ending “Ants Marching.” 

Returning to their original lineup, the band worked through “Sister” and “Two Step,” serving as the night’s encore. After the group’s hometown shows, they will participate in a two-night sold-out stand at the Mohegan Sun, leading up to their Madison Square Garden return.
