On Thursday evening, Dogs in a Pile kicked off the first in a four-night series of concerts at Ardmore Music Hall in Ardmore, Pa. The New Jersey natives delivered a two-set performance that was laden with holiday cheer, including a first-time cover of the 1980s new wave classic from The Waitresses, “Christmas Wrapping.” In addition to the previously mentioned cover, the band also integrated others’ material into their performance–originals from Paul McCartney, Cab Calloway, and Keith Mansfield.

The night ensued with originals, “EDM Song” merged into “G Song” before pushing into “Mr. Tooker.” The placement for the latter seemed to hint at the band’s latest collaboration with Asher’s Chocolate Co., to bring back the fan favorite, “Tooker Bars,” a limited-edition milk chocolate-pretzel bar named after Kieran Tooker, available at the band’s merch table, and a special treat for followers during their time outside Philly.

Set one continued with “Dangers of Rah Rah,” which pivoted into Lorde’s “Royals.” Next, the group prepared an ode to McCartney’s songbook with their adaptation of “Let ‘Em In,” with trombonist and featured guest Ian Gray adding to the night’s delivery. As opposed to closing the set there, the group pulled out one more song before taking a break, the Bloom feature, “Trunk Rum.”

The concert’s second half began with the Yuletide flair of The Waitresses’ “Christmas Wrapping.” Dogs in a Pile followed up on their debut by playing Vince Guaraldi’s instrumental jazz standard, “Linus and Lucy.” They continued with another spurt of originals, capping the section with The Beatles’ “Got to Get You Into My Life,” performed for only the third time ever by this group.

Following the fan favorite, “My Disguise,” the group chose Cab Calloway’s “Minnie and Moocher,” before finishing the frame with “¿Por Qué, Pedro?” and “Craig and Pat.” The evening’s encore consisted of Mansfield’s “Funky Fanfare” and their own “Say Something.” After last night’s performance, Dogs in a Pile will return to the Ardmore Music Hall tonight, Friday, Dec. 19, for their second in a four-night installment.
