Dogs in a Pile Conclude Ardmore Stay with Steve Kimock
Over the weekend, Dogs in a Pile turned in a series of concerts at Ardmore Music Hall in Ardmore, Pa., laying the groundwork for Sunday night’s team-up with a very special guest, Jerry Garcia’s favorite guitarist, Steve Kimock. Leading up to the residency finale, the Asbury Park ensemble welcomed Jonathan Colman and Eli Winderman (Dopapod), bandmates in WCK Trio with John Morgan Kimock, on Friday for covers that touched on originals by Miles Davis [“All Blues”], Jerry Garcia [“Bird Song”], and The Meters [“People Say”]. Saturday, they played a lunchtime set for the kids, teaming up with Rock and Roll Playhouse before scorching the night with another return to the stage.
Ahead of Sunday’s presentation, Dogs in a Pile steeped Saturday’s frame with both originals and selects from Jimi Hendrix [“Fire”], Ben Folds [“Song for the Dumped”], Billy Preston [“Will It Go ‘Round in Circles”], as well as The Reverend Horton Heat [“Psychobilly Freakout”]. The precursor to their last regional gig for the year did not include guests, making Sunday’s showing a potent display of guitar might. Notably, Jimmy Law and Kimock gigged together during the Matt Butler-led Everyone Orchestra on Jam Cruise 21.
Last night’s gig got underway with the band’s own songs, “Westward” and “Didn’t You Know?” Next, Kimock took the stage and accompanied the group on the Bloom cuts “Today” and “Stranger,” played without pause before bumping into the Grateful Dead spectacle known as “Crazy Fingers.” Kimock helped close out the set, which functioned like a nonstop sequence: “Spun” > “Bugle on the Shelf.” The second half of the night consisted of a hefty offering of originals in addition to one timeless cover, “Dancing in the Streets,” sandwiched between “Go Set” on either side of the Martha Reeves and the Vandellas grab.
For the encore, the band delivered an unbroken series of material. “Bubble” burst into “EDM Song,” before a pocket of air seemed to cause the formation of a final “Bubble” to cap the residency. Following the band’s time outside Philadelphia, they will return to the stage on Tuesday, December 30 and Wednesday, December 31, where they will celebrate New Year’s Eve at the Bearsville Theater in Woodstock, N.Y. Tickets remain on sale and can be purchased here.
