Dogs in a Pile Mark Release of Third Studio Record ‘Distroid’ at Garcia’s Chicago with Full Album Delivery

On Wednesday, Nov. 19, Dogs in a Pile resumed their residency at Chicago’s newly opened Garcia’s venue. It was a red-letter day for the ensemble, with considerable hype surrounding the midnight arrival of their third studio album, Distroid. With the collection lying in wait, it seemed like the proper occasion to trickle the contents of their hard work into the second set, but not before the initial batch of music, which nodded toward the group’s influences by way of Stan Jones, the Grateful Dead, and Cab Calloway.

Dogs in a Pile’s Brian Murray, Jeremy Kaplan, Jimmy Law, Joey Babick, and Sam Lucid kicked off their midweek appearance in The Windy City with their own “Bent Strange,” which melted into Jones’ acclaimed contribution to the country/western canon, “Ghost Rider in the Sky.” Ceasing to come to a complete stop, the band looped back to the set’s opener for a ricochet of content to kick off the event.

In acknowledgment of the location, the five-piece covered the Dead’s “Help on the Way/Slipknot!,” before converging the latter into “Creep.” On the other side of the original number, the band pulled out “Lazy Day,” followed by Cab Calloway’s “Minnie Moocher.” For the final entries of their initial set, Dogs delivered “Unfocused” into “Trunk Rum.”

Like the makeup of their third studio album, the band worked through the contents of that tracking list, beginning with the stabilizing, “Go Set,” which distinguished each player’s ability to cop a groove. With the record comprising fan-loved live staples, they continued the trajectory of their LP with “Lucia’s Secret,” “My Disguise,” and “Nicolette.”

The contents of the second set featured a pairing of “Shenanigans” with “Thomas Duncan, Pt. 3.” The band coaxed their jam spirits, with a nonstop run through of remaining material off the record: “The Bag,” “Samba for Sam,” “¿Por Que, Pedro?” and back to “Sam.” For their final delivery, the band used their encore to pay homage to Joe Cocker on “Space Captain.”

After last night’s complete performance of Distroid, the set is now available on streaming services and for purchase on vinyl. Via press release, Kaplan said of the set: “It’s like the live show plus extra bits that we can’t replicate onstage because we don’t have five arms.” Stream the LP here

Dogs in a Pile will return to Garcia’s Chicago tonight for the final performance of their November residency. Tickets are sold out.
