dust. Announce Debut Album ‘Sky Is Falling’, Share ‘Drawbacks’
Steel City post-punk powerhouse dust are stepping up in a big way – the rising five-piece have just announced their debut album, Sky Is Falling, set to land on October 10. And to mark the occasion, they’ve dropped a blistering new single, dubbed ‘Drawbacks’.
Written entirely as a band, ‘Drawbacks’ is dust at full tilt — a tense, textured tangle of woozy sax, driving bass and frenetic drums, topped off with Justin Teale’s rapid-fire “word vomit” of personal frustration, self-doubt, and flashes of hope.
dust – ‘Drawbacks’
“It’s about everyday feelings that should be comfortable but somehow aren’t,” Teale explains in a press statement. “Feelings of shame and regret in social situations, where you can’t shake off the head noise.”
The track follows the group’s 2023 breakout EP et cetera, etc, which put their industrial-tinged, genre-blurring spin on Australian post-punk firmly on the map. Since then, dust have barely stopped moving — touring Australia, the UK and US with the likes of Slowdive, Interpol, Bloc Party and Protomartyr, tearing up festival stages at Laneway, Pitchfork Music Festival, London Calling, and repping hard at BIGSOUND, SXSW and The Great Escape.
Now they’re ready to make their biggest statement yet via their debut long-player. Sky Is Falling promises to capture dust’s knack for shoegaze haze, electronic experimentation, abrasive guitar work and those signature off-kilter sax lines, all woven into a restless exploration of melancholia, risk-taking and making sense of chaos.
The album’s title was born on their first international tour, a phrase that kept surfacing to sum up “the infinite and indefinite possibilities ahead” – and the post-tour comedown that followed.
“Accepting the unknown has made us more comfortable experimenting and taking risks,” the band explain.
