Freejak turns Ashanti’s ‘Only U’ into a driving house hit
Freejak does it again. This time he taps 2004 and Ashanti’s ‘Only U’ to twist up a high octane club cut that puts a afterhours finish on the R&B classic. Almost 20 years since Ashanti’s hit dominated airwaves, the UK born house technician deftly updates everything made the original such a crowd pleaser. From the opening moments, Freejak leans into the original’s appeal — namely its iconic synth line. Originally an early aughts club haunt, ‘Only U’ was always meant for a four-to-the-floor proven effortlessly on this one by Freejak. He samples the original’s ominous synths to drive the track forward while Ashanti’s top line stays as infectious as ever.
