Gov’t Mule Perform The Allman Brothers Band’s ‘At Fillmore East’ for Mule-O-Ween

Gov’t Mule showcased a spectacular weekend of Mule-O-Ween shows at The Tabernacle in Atlanta. The weekend kicked off with the debut of the band’s forthcoming LP, Heavy Load Blues played in its entirety during the first set of Friday’s show. Gov’t Mule wrapped the weekend Saturday with a second set cover of The Allman Brothers Band’s iconic 1971 record At Fillmore East. 

Frontman Warren Hayes, bassist Jorgen Carlsson, drummer Matt Abts and multi-instrumentalist Danny Louis were joined by special guests Charlie Starr of Blackberry Smoke on guitar and original Marshall Tucker Band drummer Paul Riddle for the second set covers. 

Fans might recall Warren Hayes joining The Allman Brothers Band from 1989 till March 1997, before rejoining at the end of 2000 and participating in the lineup for their final show on Oct. 28, 2014, at New York’s Beacon Theatre. 

On Saturday, the band began the second set with Hayes-sung “Statesboro Blues,” followed by “Done Something Wrong” with Starr taking lead on vocals. They ended the set with an 18-minute rendition of “In Memory of Elizabeth Reed” followed by “Whipping Post.” Before smashing it out of the park with a “Mountain Jam” encore with Tommy Taton, frontman of Cowboy. “Mountain Jam” was also played by Widespread Panic as a nod to the 50th anniversary of Duane Allman’s death.
