Gracie Abrams has delivered a powerful condemnation of Donald Trump’s response to Rob Reiner’s death, calling the President’s behaviour “the most poisonous and vile narcissism maybe in the history of humanity” in an emotional Instagram post that has since been deleted.

The American singer-songwriter shared the moving message yesterday as Hanukkah commenced (as per Rolling Stone), addressing what she described as Trump’s “indefensible” mocking of the director’s death. Reiner and his wife were reportedly killed by their son, making Trump’s public comments particularly callous according to Abrams.

“Within 24 hours of the most unimaginable tragedy a family can endure, we see the President yet again reveal the most poisonous and vile narcissism maybe in the history of humanity,” Abrams wrote in her now-vanished post.

The 25-year-old artist’s statement extended beyond Trump’s comments to address broader global suffering. She expressed being “heartbroken” for victims of recent mass shootings, including those killed at a Hanukkah celebration in Bondi Beach, Australia, describing herself as “devastated for their families during the holiday, a time meant for gathering and for light.”

Abrams also referenced the shooting at Brown University in Rhode Island, where two students were killed, saying she felt “sick inside” for the victims and affected community. Her message highlighted the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza, describing the “earthshattering pain” of displaced Palestinians living under tarps “being whipped by the wind and the rain through the mud.”

“Total desecration,” she wrote of the conditions faced by those in Gaza.

The artist concluded her emotional message by acknowledging the overwhelming nature of global suffering whilst attempting to maintain hope. “Over and over and over this happens. It is getting harder to find the words to describe the pain in the world. I am lighting a candle for everybody who is hurting.”

Abrams spent much of 2024 touring in support of her album The Secret of Us, which marked a significant milestone in her career.

She also released Apple Music Live: Gracie Abrams, a concert special featuring her performance at Colorado’s iconic Red Rocks Amphitheatre. The special showcased material from The Secret of Us alongside earlier tracks, demonstrating her evolution as both a songwriter and performer.
