Drummers typically read music in a different way than other musicians. While most musicians read sheet music, drummers use a system called rhythmic notation. This system uses lines and spaces to represent different drums and cymbals in a drum kit, and various symbols to indicate what kind of rhythm or beat should be played on those drums. It’s a bit like learning a new language, but with practice, drummers can read and perform very complex rhythms from a written score.
