    Turntables, also known as record players, play music through a process that involves a few different components. First, a vinyl record is placed on the turntable. The record is made of a soft, black plastic called vinyl. The vinyl has tiny, grooves etched into its surface that spiral from the outside edge to the center. These grooves contain the actual music that was recorded.

    A small, circular piece of metal, usually made of steel, sits on top of the record. This is called the stylus, or needle. The stylus is attached to a small, electrically driven arm called the tonearm. The tonearm is moved manually to the edge of the record to start playing.
