There are two main types of turntables: manual and automatic.

1. Manual Turntables: These require the user to manually place the needle at the beginning of the record. When the record finishes playing, the user has to lift the needle off the record.

2. Automatic Turntables: These are more convenient for the user as they have a mechanism that places the needle at the beginning of the record and then automatically lifts it off at the end. This eliminates the need for the user to manually operate the needle.

A third type, semi-automatic turntables, has the convenience of an automatic turntable, but the user has to manually lift the needle off the record at the end of the play.
