A MP3 file is a digital music file, which uses compressed audio coding, a form of lossy data-compression, to store audio files using significantly less storage space than uncompressed audio files. This is achieved by reducing the parts of the audio file that are not as important to the human ear, such as the silent background parts in between notes, allowing the file to take up less space without significantly altering the sound quality. The MP3 file format is a standard set by the Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG).
