Why was MP3 discontinued?

MP3 as a file format hasn’t been discontinued, it’s still widely used for music files. However, the use of the older and less efficient MP3 encoder in some software has been phased out in favor of more efficient ones like AAC and Ogg Vorbis, which provide similar or better quality at lower bitrates. The term “MP3” is also sometimes incorrectly used to refer to the now-defunct portable audio players that used to come with a built-in MP3 player, but the format itself is still very much alive.
