Jazz and blues share a few key similarities. Both originate from the African American communities in the United States, with jazz coming from New Orleans and blues from the Mississippi Delta. Their scales and chords also show similarities; they both use “blue notes,” which are flattened third, fifth, and seventh notes in a scale, giving them a distinct sound. Improvisation is another important element in both genres, as well as a strong rhythmic component.
