Jazz music was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, around the start of the 20th century. It was a blend of African and European music, combining elements like the call-and-response pattern and blue notes from African music with the structured harmonies and meters of European music. The roots of jazz can also be traced back to blues, ragtime, and marching band music. The first jazz recordings were made in the 1910s, and the genre really took off in the 1920s, known as the Jazz Age.
