While much classical music was written in the past, the term “classical music” is more accurately defined as the type of music that was typically written in the Western world between approximately 1750 to 1825, which is called the Classical period. It can also refer to music of the preceding Baroque period (1600 to 1750) and the following Romantic era (1825 to 1900). So, not all classical music is old, but much of it was written some time ago. The most important factor that defines classical music is not its age but its adherence to Western musical tradition and its high-art aspirations.
