    Geologically speaking, yes, rock is harder than metal. The Mohs Scale of Mineral Hardness, developed in 1812 by Friedrich Mohs, a German mineralogist, measures the relative hardness of various minerals on a scale from 1 to 10, with 10 being the hardest. On this scale, metals typically have a hardness below 5, while various types of rock can exceed 5. However, in everyday language, the word “metal” is often used to describe something strong and hard, so the terminology can be confusing.
