The term “blues” originated from the deep emotional feeling of sadness, melancholy, and depression, which was often referred to as having the “blues”. Musically, it developed from folk spirituals, work songs, field hollers, shouts, and chants, and dance tunes. Early blues was characterized by simple and repetitive lyrical structures, direct and often explicit content, and a disregard for societal expectations for musical decorum.
