Radio legend Howard Stern’s future with SiriusXM is uncertain as his five-year, $500 million contract comes to an end.

Legendary shock jock Howard Stern may soon retire as his five-year, $500 million contract with SiriusXM winds down. The 71-year-old would reportedly be open to a short-term contract for the right price, but is considering ending his tenure with SiriusXM altogether.

“He may do a one- to two-year contract if they can meet him where he wants financially,” said one source. “He doesn’t want to pull the plug on his employees like this.”

Another source told The Daily Mail that Stern is off during the summer but has been considering retiring this year. They noted his irritation with SiriusXM’s reliance on competing radio host Andy Cohen.

“Sirius and Stern are never going to meet on the money he is going to want,” said one insider. “It’s no longer worth the investment,” they add, to keep paying Stern’s $100-million-a-year salary.

According to The Sun, Stern’s outspoken political views—especially his criticism of Donald Trump—may be a factor in whether his show will return. “If Sirius isn’t going to give Stern a good offer, I don’t think it would have anything to do with his ratings,” the insider said. “It’s more likely everything to do with the political climate.”

Howard Stern started the second iteration of “The Howard Stern Show” on SiriusXM in 2006, and has been a staple on the platform ever since. His reputation has varied significantly over the years; to some, he is a larger-than-life dominator in the radio host game. But to others, he is increasingly “an out-of-touch has-been.”

His show isn’t drawing in the numbers it once was—especially compared to Cohen’s two channels on the network. Though he still has his share of die-hard fans, his show has gone from 20 million daily listeners to just 125,000.
