26 minutes of remastered footage from a rare solo performance of Jeff Buckley will screen immediately after the biopic film, in theaters now.
Magnolia Pictures’ It’s Never Over: Jeff Buckley biopic hit theaters on August 8, raking in an impressive $400,000 across 120 theaters nationwide. Directed by Amy Berg, the film is a portrait of the influential musician, who died suddenly at age 30, told through never-before-seen footage and intimate interviews with those who knew him.
Sold-out screenings across the country contributed to the film’s strong start. It has been called “a testament to the enduring appeal of [Buckley’s] music, and to Amy Berg’s great film.”
To celebrate the film’s theatrical release, Magnolia Pictures is proudly presenting 26 minutes of exclusive, remastered footage from a rare solo performance at The Middle East in Cambridge, MA. The performance was filmed on February 19, 1994, six months before the release of Buckley’s only finished album prior to his death, Grace. The previously unreleased material will screen immediately following the film and will only be available while the film is in theaters.
“Discovering this footage felt like a dream,” said director Amy Berg. “I was instantly transported into that room, witnessing a barely discovered virtuosic talent alongside just a handful of others. I was left speechless—and more than a few tears were shed. It’s an absolute pleasure to share this newly mastered footage and give audiences the chance to experience it on the big screen.”
Buckley launched his career as a tribute to his late father, folk musician Tim Buckley, but quickly became a rising star in his own right and signed to Columbia Records. His intimate and influential cover of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” further catapulted him to fame.
Buckley drowned in the Wolf River in Memphis in 1997, leaving behind an unfinished second album and a devastated family, as well as a legion of friends and fans. Over the decades since his passing, Buckley’s legend has continued to grow, as a new generation of fans has started discovering his music through social media.
It’s Never Over: Jeff Buckley is a Topic Studios and Fremantle Film, directed by Amy Berg and produced by Ryan Heller, Christine Connor, Mandy Chang, Matthew Roozen, Jennie Bedusa, and Amy Berg. Executive producers are Mary Guibert, Alison Raykovich, Brian A. Kates, Michael Bloom, Jennifer Westin, Maria Zuckerman, Brad Pitt, and Ian Stratford.
