Jeff Tweedy Concludes Los Angeles Residency with Sons and ‘Twilight Override’ Debut

Last night, Jeff Tweedy concluded his time in Los Angeles, adding a period to a sentence that spanned four live performances at Largo at the Coronet. The evocative wordsmith’s residency was billed as a solo run tied to his latest studio work, the triple album Twilight Override. Like previous shows tied to this residency, the impetus of the experience was the arrival of Tweedy’s sons and collaborators, Spencer and Sammy, who expanded their stage time by sitting in on nearly half of the set: a massive exploration of the new record.

Thursday’s fourth and final concert dipped into the contents of Cruel Country from the jump, with Tweedy’s arrival on “Story to Tell.” He positioned three pieces of his sophomore solo set, WARM, “Don’t Forget,” “Having Been Is No Way to Be,” and “Some Birds,” before the entry into one of Wilco’s most popular numbers, and its iconic opening line “I am an American aquarium drinker…” on “I Am Trying to Break Your Heart.” The Twilight Override featured track “One Tiny Flower” came before a career-spanning series of songs from Tweedy: Wilco’s “Country Song Upside-Down,” Golden Smog’s “Radio King,” and Uncle Tupelo’s “New Madrid.”

Next, the musician hovered on an intense feeling via “Love is for Love” and “I’m Always in Love.” Before bringing out his sons, Tweedy delivered “Dawned on Me” before welcoming his sons for a debut of “Over My Head (Everything Goes).” The harmonious new number kicked off a run of material from the same record, including “Forever Never Ends” and “Amar Bharati,” before switching over to WARMER’s “Evergreen.”

The latter portion of the show was a sprint through Twilight Override tracks, “Mirror,” “Stray Cats in Spain,” “Too Real,” “New Orleans,” “Enough,” and “Lou Reed Was My Babysitter,” all of which featured assistance from Spencer and Sammy.

After closing his Los Angeles residency, Tweedy will take part in Wilco’s destination concert event, Sky Blue Sky, in Riviera Maya, Mexico, Jan. 15-19.
