After completing the first half of his Los Angeles residency earlier this week, distinguished wordsmith and narrator of vulnerability, Jeff Tweedy, returned to his post for the latest installment of his solo residency at Largo at the Coronet. Last night’s concert followed a familiar format to the preceding concerts with Tweedy’s sons, Spencer and Sammy, who extended their sit-in, contributing to eight tracks, after dad’s trip down memory lane, and an 11-song display that fluctuated between solo material, Wilco standards, a nod to his Uncle Tupelo days and admiration for longtime friend and collaborator, Mavis Staples.

Tweedy pressed into the night by stringing together a series of acts that might well inspire a sense of self-liberation on “Feel Free.” For his next move, the musician performed the second-ever delivery of the Twilight Override deep cut, “Better Song.” Whereas the nights prior leaned into popular pieces of Tweedy’s canon, Wednesday’s gig was slightly more obscure. “Gwendolyn” broke up the Wilco segment, which continued with “One Sunday Morning,” “Everlasting Everything,” “A Lifetime to Find,” and “Jesus, Etc.”

Before welcoming his sons to the stage, Tweedy performed Uncle Tupelo’s Anodyne piece, “Acuff-Rose.” He returned to Wilco-associated songs on “Dreamer in My Dreams,” before capping the concert’s solo segment with Staples’ “You Are Not Alone,” produced by Tweedy. Spencer and Sammy joined their father on stage for the next part of the show, cementing the start of their sit-in with “Half-Asleep.”

Referring to their latest studio session, the family band offered solidarity for peaceful protest on “Amar Bharati,” followed by the ethereal “New Orleans.” They went with “Save It for Me” next, and positioned one-hundred-proof “Cry Baby Cry” ahead of the new album’s title track and a finishing “Lou Reed Was My Babysitter.”

Tweedy will return to Largo at the Coronet tonight for the final concert of his Los Angeles residency. The show is sold out. Next week, Tweedy will depart for Mexico, where he will participate in Wilco’s destination concert event, Sky Blue Sky, Jan. 15-19.
