Guitarist Julian Lynch has announced that he will leave Real Estate following their upcoming dates on the road with Tennis. Lynch joined the indie-rock outfit in 2016, after co-founding guitarist Matt Mondanile was fired from the group due to allegations of sexual misconduct.

In a statement shared on both his social media accounts and Real Estate’s accounts, Lynch explained, “Next week’s brief leg of touring with Tennis will hold special significance for me, since these will be my final shows with the band before I move onto other things. Thank you to my bandmates for sharing these experiences with me. Thanks also to Real Estate’s welcoming fans and to all of the kind and talented people I’ve been able to meet or work with along the way. Looking forward to seeing some of you at the shows next week :)”

Though he joined Real Estate several years after their formation, Lynch grew up with founding members Martin Courtney, Alex Bleeker and Mondanile and the three musicians backed him in the project Lese Majesty while still in college. Lynch, who also worked in academia, went on to launch a solo career and occasionally contribute to music in the Real Estate ecosystem, including 2014’s Atlas, before he officially signed on as a member of the group. He has since appeared on 2016’s In Mind, 2020’s The Main Thing and 2024’s Daniel, as well as this year’s rarities compilation, The Wee Small Hours. Following Lynch’s announcement, Courtney commented, “Guitar buddies for life. Regular buddies too.”

Real Estate will kick off a run of shows supporting Tennis tomorrow at Denver, CO’s The Mission Ballroom. They will also launch a tour celebrating Atlas in September and October.
