King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard Debut “Candles” in Prague

King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard continued their trek across Europe on Monday and Tuesday with two more dates in the penultimate leg of their 2025 World Tour. The genre-obliterating psych ensemble’s stops in Berlin and Prague were rave shows, which consistently give them an outlet for their most disruptive, irreverent and unpredictable impulses. At both shows, the sextet convened around their modular synthesizer table, affectionately named “Nathan,” and turned in warped takes on familiar favorites.
At Berlin’s Columbiahalle, King Gizzard began with an intro of “Murder of the Universe,” the dark, weird, cinematic metal title track from their 2017 album; after its electronic debut on Halloween in Manchester, this version more drawn out, setting the sscne for an ensuing “Cyboogie.” The first-time electronic treatment of their Infest the Rat’s Nest favorite “Perihelion” made for a nice crowd pleaser within a barrage of rarer cuts, most notably their second-ever live performance of ”Hell’s Itch,” and later the 10th appearance of their Omnium Gatherium track “Kepler-22b.” After seamlessly merging “Frankensein” into “Set,” the band took their only beat of the evening before closing with a blissful “Blue Morpho.”
Tuesday’s show at Prague’s SaSaZu rolled in with “Extinction” and “Theia,” two songs readymade for the rave format alongside the rest of 2023’s krautrock-inspired The Silver Cord. King Gizzard underscored the other side of their electro-acoustic mayhem with the techno-esque “Shanghai,” then looked way back to “Superposition” from 2017’s Gumboot Soup. After winding through electronic versions of “Sense,” “Flamethrower (Outro)” and “The Grim Reaper,” the band paused before tearing into their last act with “Ice V,” which melted away into a triumphant live debut of the Omnium Gatherium b-side “Candles.”
King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard will return to the stage tonight for another rave show at Vienna’s Gasometer, then continue with two further stops in Europe through Nov. 15. The band will close out their year of touring with a nine-stop Australia series in December. Find tickets and more information at kinggizzardandthelizardwizard.com.
