‘Kpop Demon Hunters’ just had its 15th straight week leading Netflix’s Top 10, becoming the longest-running title to hold the position.
Netflix’s ‘Kpop Demon Hunters‘ is fast becoming an institution in pop culture moments. After becoming Netflix’s most popular movie of all time in August, the animated film just spent its 15th straight week on the Netflix Top 10, becoming the longest-running title to hold the position on the English-language films chart.
That’s particularly notable, given that the previous record-holder, Red Notice, charted 14 times total—but only 12 of those were consecutive weeks. ‘Kpop Demon Hunters‘ has achieved its 15 weeks consecutively. Further, ‘Kpop Demon Hunters” spent eight of its 15 weeks in the #1 position, and seven weeks at #2.
The film has yet to fall below the second spot, and it looks like it won’t falter any time soon—especially since the film clocked 19.3 million views in its 15th week, nearly doubling that of the #2 title (Ruth & Boaz).
Interestingly, particularly given the unprecedented success of ‘Kpop Demon Hunters,’ the film was originally developed and produced by Sony Pictures Animation. But Netflix covered the film’s production budget (reportedly around $100 million), while Sony received a fixed profit of approximately $20 million. In return, Netflix secured exclusive streaming rights and control over all future revenue streams, including potential sequels, spinoffs, music, and merch.
At the time, according to Sony Pictures CEO Ravi Ahuja, that move made sense. But then the film’s success saw Netflix take it to theaters, adding a whole new level of profit and further success. So does Sony have any regrets? It’s hard to say.
“It started out on Netflix, and then word of mouth made it grow [to theaters]—that’s a lot harder to do,” said Ahuja, who still admits he thinks the deal with Netflix was the right move. “I think it was in the right home. Our mission is to make great content and find the right home. And I think ‘Kpop Demon Hunters’’ right home was Netflix.”
Meanwhile, the unprecedented success of the film will see its titular trio—Rumi, Mira, and Zoey—land in Fortnite starting on October 2. The three will star in Demon Rush, a special version of the game’s fan-favorite Horde Rush mode, where players will work together to survive against waves of demons.
