Big Thief have announced Double Infinity, the shapeshifting alt-folk trio’s sixth studio album. To follow 2022’s Grammy-nominated Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe In You, Adrianne Lenker, Buck Meek and James Krivchenia recruited a community of collaborators and embraced spur-of-the-moment improvisation. They’ve previewed the resulting record, due on Sept. 5 via 4AD, with “Incomprehensible,” an open-armed embrace of aging’s mysteries that matches an earthy, percussive rumble of guitar and drums with a new age canopy of zither, strings and twinkling chimes.

The trio set Double Infinity to tape last winter, biking back and forth from Brooklyn for three weeks of nine-hour sessions at New York’s Power Station. Together with their longtime collaborator Dom Monks, who produced, mixed and engineered the nine-track project, the band recorded live with limited overdubs, letting improvised arrangements and spontaneous discoveries imbue the project with a kinetic, expressive spirit. This effect is furthered by contributions from 10 guest musicians–Alena Spanger, Caleb Michel, Hannah Cohen, Jon Nellen, Joshua Crumbly, June McDoom, Mikel Patrick Avery, Mikey Buishas and New York experimental icon Laraaji–who round out the group’s sound in fits and starts.

Big Thief will take their new record on the road this fall with the Somersault Slide 360 Tour, plotting 20 performances across North America from Sept. 17 to Nov. 7–including a set at Queens, N.Y.’s Forest Hills Stadium and their largest headline show to date at Los Angeles’ Hollywood Bowl. Since their last extended outing, all three members have released solo studio records–Lenker’s Bright Future, Meek’s Haunted Mountain and Krivchenia’s Blood Karaoke and Performing Belief–and Lenker shared a new live album Live at Revolution Hall in April. In February, the trio shared the five-track Passional Relations EP to support wildfire relief in Southern California.

Double Infinity is available to pre-order now. Listen to “Incomprehensible” below and find more information at bigthief.net.
