Listen: The Avett Brothers and Mike Patton Announce New Joint LP ‘AVTT/PTTN,’ Share First Single “Eternal Love”

The Avett Brothers, Scott and Seth Avett, have united with the renowned frontman of Faith No More and Mr. Bungle, Mike Patton, to create a new record dubbed AVTT/PTTN, due on November 14 via Thirsty Tigers in association with Ramseur Records and Ipecac Recordings. As a sampling of their amalgamated sound, the fused ensemble has shared its first single, “Eternal Love,” now available. 

The Avett Brothers and Patton’s relationship grew out of mutual respect, which blossomed into a potent creative exchange sparked by their shared fan base. The onset of their musical unification serves their collaborative approach, which fostered the exchange of songs and ideas that evolved with each pass from player to player, leaving a lasting and personalized mark on the resulting material. 

“This is what art is,” Scott reflects on the collaborative process. “This is what making is supposed to be: in secret and with no ambition.”

For the Avetts, the experience presented an opportunity to work with an integral influence on their own sound, “Mike’s part of our DNA, like the fabric of our youth,” says Scott. “Literally, we studied him. He’s a dear friend now, but when we were younger, I was imitating him.” 

Patton offered his own perspective on the process of working with the brothers, and their cross-country exchange of ideas: “My peculiar challenge in this was to become a long-distance cousin. A brother that was orphaned. Maybe they kept him in the chicken coop or some shit. They brought him out years and years later.”

As an amalgamated musical force, the trio blends their voices in harmony, embracing the gentle acoustics of LP opener, “Dark Night of My Soul,” before letting folk classic “The Ox Driver’s Song” make an impression. The set also features the fuzz-heavy “Heaven’s Breath,” which presents a new range for the brothers. 

Serving as the album’s first single, “Eternal Love” is a meditation that muses on the universal pull of love. Listen below.
