Live Nation Continues Its Global Expansion With the Acquisition of France’s Paris La Défense Arena, Plans ‘To Host Significantly More Productions Year-Round’

Live Nation’s aggressive international expansion isn’t through yet: Now, as it grapples with considerable U.S. regulatory scrutiny, the promoter’s inked a deal to acquire France’s Paris La Défense Arena.
The Ticketmaster parent unveiled its latest purchase today, less than one month after revealing plans to take over the operations of Thailand’s Impact Arena. By now, most are aware of Live Nation’s stateside legal woes – including but not limited to a Justice Department antitrust battle and a separate suit from the FTC.
Against this backdrop, the present’s a good a time as any for the live-entertainment giant to continue its global buildout. Enter the proposed “landmark deal” for the Paris La Défense Arena, which Live Nation intends to upgrade, expand, and use to host “more year-round events.”
(According to Ticketmaster France, the Paris La Défense Arena, reportedly Europe’s largest indoor venue, has “a modular capacity ranging from 15,000 to 45,000 spectators.” The latter figure pertains to concerts.)
Neither the buyer nor the selling party, Ovalto Group, publicly disclosed the price tag behind the transaction. Moreover, the deal for the roughly eight-year-old venue remains subject to regulatory approval; Live Nation specifically described its objectives as in the cards for “once the deal completes.”
In any event, chief among those objectives is a goal of bringing “significantly more productions” to the Paris La Défense Arena, which last year offered performances from Hans Zimmer, G-Dragon, Post Malone, Jelly Roll, Iron Maiden, 50 Cent, Mary J. Blige, and others.
Elaborating on these plans, Live Nation France MD Angelo Gopee emphasized the post-purchase aim of hosting “more productions.”
“Our ambition is simple: to make Paris La Défense Arena a venue that welcomes more productions, with the finest facilities for artists, all event producers and promoters and, above all, the audience,” Gopee said.
“This ambition is rooted in a strong commitment to local inclusion, education and cultural access – ensuring major live experiences drive local development and inspire younger generations,” the 17-year Live Nation exec concluded.
Back to Live Nation’s aforementioned legal difficulties in the States, the most significant of the courtroom showdowns is undoubtedly the DOJ’s antitrust action, which has the potential to split the company and Ticketmaster.
However, this central complaint is also factoring into smaller-scale disputes. Swifties referenced the Justice Department confrontation (and specifically information that came to light as part of the litigation) multiple times in their newest Eras Tour pre-sale suit filing, for instance.
And more recently, we broke down Fanimal’s own Live Nation/Ticketmaster complaint. Therein, the formerly high-flying ticketing startup reiterated that “AEG, the second largest primary ticketing services provider, has reported to the Department of Justice that venues that it managed were told that they would lose valuable shows if Ticketmaster was not used as a vendor.”
