Australia’s live music scene boasts an incredibly loyal audience, according to the “Living for Live” report from Live Nation, a survey with 40,000 respondents aged 18-54 across 15 countries. The main takeaway? Live music fans prefer concerts to everything, even sex.

The survey is a snapshot of how people around the world are seeking entertainment and happiness, spending their free time, expressing their identities and connecting with others.

In Australia, 42% of respondents said they turn to live music for entertainment over sports, films and TV. 82% of respondents said music is core to their identity, 76% said live is where they most feel themselves. Australians also agree that a love for music is the passion they most want to pass on to children.

In Australia, 130 million tickets have been sold for live music events so far this year, and attendees are clear on their priorities. 70% of respondents said they’d choose to see their favourite artist perform instead of having sex.

Aussie music fans are familiar with having to travel for these events, over 6/10 of respondents travel to attend live music events, giving regional economies a boost too — 76% of those attendees spend big on food and beverages around live music events.

It’s all consistent with global data, marking Australia as a key player in the global live music industry and economy.

“Live music has a unique power to bring people together,” said Kristy Rosser, Senior Vice President, Head of Media and Sponsorship AU NZ. “Fans aren’t just attending a concert. They’re part of something bigger.”

“They travel, they connect, and they create memories that stay with them for life. Here in Australia, we see that passion every day. The Living for Live report captures the heart of that experience and shows how live music continues to inspire, unite and shape culture across the world.”
